Where It All Started

My name is Abdur Razzak, and I am a Full-Stack Web Developer from Dhaka, Bangladesh. I started my coding journey several years ago with nothing but a laptop, an internet connection, and a stubborn determination to build things that worked. Like many developers from South Asia, I taught myself through online resources, YouTube tutorials, and a lot of trial and error. The early days were frustrating — CSS that never did what I wanted, JavaScript errors I couldn't understand, and projects that broke in production.

Learning the MERN Stack

The turning point came when I committed to mastering the MERN stack — MongoDB, Express.js, React, and Node.js. I built project after project: a todo app, a weather dashboard, a blog platform, an e-commerce store. Each project taught me something new and added to my portfolio. I also learned WordPress deeply, which gave me a second specialization that opened up a different market of clients. By the time I created my Upwork profile, I had a solid portfolio and genuine competence to back it up.

The First Months on Upwork

My first months on Upwork were humbling. Getting the first client without reviews is the hardest part — I competed against experienced freelancers with five-star ratings and detailed portfolios. I wrote personalized proposals, charged competitive rates, and focused on underpromising and overdelivering. My first client was for a React component — a small project, but I treated it like the most important job in the world. That 5-star review opened the door.

Building the Review Foundation

The next six months were focused on accumulating reviews across different types of projects. I took on React frontend projects, Next.js full-stack builds, WordPress customizations, and MERN stack APIs. Each project type built credibility in a different area. I kept my Job Success Score at 100% by never letting a client feel surprised — I communicated proactively, delivered on time, and fixed issues without being asked twice.

Achieving Top Rated Status

Top Rated status on Upwork requires a 90%+ Job Success Score over the past 12 months, consistent earnings, and an optimized profile. When I hit Top Rated, my profile visibility increased significantly — I started receiving inbound invitations from clients, not just competing in open proposals. The badge signals trust and professionalism. My hourly rate increased meaningfully after achieving Top Rated, because clients searching for quality developers filter by this status.

What I Would Tell My Earlier Self

If I could go back and give advice to the Abdur Razzak who was just starting out: specialize earlier, build a niche portfolio of your best work (not everything), and invest as much in communication skills as technical skills. Great communication doubles your value to clients — they are buying reliability and clarity, not just code. And from Dhaka, Bangladesh, working with clients in the US and Europe is absolutely achievable — the internet has eliminated most geographic disadvantages for skilled developers.
