Burnout is not just tiredness — it is a state of chronic exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy caused by sustained, unresolved workplace stress. It can take months to develop and months to recover from. Pushing through without addressing it makes it worse.
Code that used to excite you now feels tedious. You make simple mistakes you would normally never make. You dread starting work in the morning. You feel cynical about projects or colleagues. These signs appear weeks before full burnout sets in.
Take real time off — not a long weekend, but at least two weeks with no work email or Slack. After returning, identify and address the root cause: unclear expectations, overcommitment, toxic management, or skills mismatch. Burnout always has a cause.
Set and enforce working hour boundaries. Learn to say no to scope creep and unrealistic deadlines. Take all your vacation days. Maintain a life outside of code — hobbies, relationships, and physical exercise are not optional luxuries, they are professional tools.
